With the Spanish establishment still not wanting to come to terms with its past, Laura Alvarez Soler looks at a growing social movement offering the dignity the Spanish courts do not want to give to victims of the Franco dictatorship.
[...] Within the last decade younger generations detached from the dictatorship and therefore not afraid to face any kind of reprisal, started the re-establishment of the historical memory of the country. Social movements are emerging claiming dignity and justice for the victims and this contributes to the general awareness of the necessity to recover the historical memory. Some might think the long period of social and political silence that followed the re-establishment of democracy in 1978 is about to reach its end. Instead, i’d argue, it’s only the beginning. [...]
